WRFG EBON DOOLEY LITERARY CAFÉ
October 11, 2008
In celebration of 35 years of continuous broadcasting, WRFG 89.3 FM
is presenting The Ebon Dooley Literary Café. The day begins with a MEDIA JUSTICE PANEL at the Atlanta
University Center Woodruff Library building (111 James P. Brawley Drive SW) from 10am - 12pm. Davey D, journalist, activist, Hip Hop historian
and host of Pacifica 's "Hard Knock Radio," will be the featured guest panelist.
The Media Justice panel will discuss current FCC and congressional challenges to internet radio, the fight to increase diversity in mainstream media, and Hip Hop's ultimate battle - race and the politics of divide and conquer.
The Ebon Dooley Literary Café will culminate with
"Slamming with a Mission ," 5:30pm - 7:30pm, at the Cosby Auditorium on the campus of Spelman College ( 350 Spelman Lane SW ). This
POETRY SLAM will feature Atlanta 's finest spoken word artists.
The works performed will be based on social justice themes that
align with WRFG's opposition to forces that dehumanize and oppress people. Six finalists from previous slams held throughout the summer will compete for a
$500 prize.
Tying together the events of the day, the EBON DOOLEY BOOK FAIR will take place in the Woodruff Library building from 10am to 5pm. Ebon Dooley, one of the early
pioneers of WRFG, had an extensive collection of books related to the history, politics and culture of peoples of the African diaspora. Books from his personal
library along with books from other book vendors will be sold throughout the day.
The suggested donation for the day is $10, $7 for
students.
