Posts: 735 08/17/08 08:29:25	Tags : None Percy Miller announced the launch of new cable network Better Black Television. Miller's announcement did not include mention of any carriage deals. The former Master P described BBTV as "a family-friendly network that will provide positive content for a black and brown culture that will appeal to all races with a goal to bring people of color a choice when turning on their television." Miller said BBTV's content will include health and fitness; animation; financial planning; reality TV; sitcoms; dramas; movies; "responsible" hip-hop music and videos; politics; sports and entertainment news; educational children's shows; and teen and family programming. BBTV said its preliminary show list includes: · Sunset and Vine, a video show hosted by Vyshonn Miller and Brittany Phillips; · One Shot Comedy Show, hosted by Gary Johnson (a.k.a. G-Thing) and some of the funniest comedians around; · Children's educational show Gee Gee the Giraffe; · Manage Your Money, aimed at improving financial literacy; · Close to the Starz, a behind-the-scenes look at celebrities; · Karma TV Show, a bilingual soap opera with an African-American and Latino cast; · What's Cooking TV Show, a talk show covering entertainment and current events while cooking and enjoying a good meal; · The Black List Movies, featuring family-friendly content; and · Hip-Hop Garage Show, featuring new and upcoming artists in their latest music videos and interviews "selected with content appropriate to BBTV's mission and standards." "It's extremely important to feed clean, quality and positive subject matter to our families," chairman and CEO Miller said in a statement. "We believe TV content can be positive and responsible and still have good ratings with great content." Miller continued, "BBTV will offer all kinds of family friendly entertainment that everyone can enjoy. Our mission is to target the new generation of responsible African-American and multiethnic English-speaking American and family-oriented and responsible hip-hop consumers who are taking charge of their families and striving for a better tomorrow." BBTV advisory-board members include: Academy Award- and Golden Globe-winner Denzel Washington; businessman and Academy Award-nominee Will Smith; Vault Load Films president, entrepreneur and senior-level business executive Jim Finkl; National Association for the Advancement of Colored People executive director Vicangelo Bullock; professional basketball player and businessman Derek Anderson (Charlotte Bobcats); 20-year cable-television and film-industry veteran Sal Martino; businessman, community activist and founding father of hip-hop DJ Kool Herc; entrepreneur, businessman and animation specialist Olatokunbo Betiku; and community activist, board president of Nailah House Foster Family Agency, speaker and teacher at Trump University and real estate mogul Curtis Oakes. "Better Black Television has been a vision of mine for some years," Miller said in a statement. "I've done a lot to promote and change the way messages are relayed to our children and our families over the past few years. Promoting positive content and positive messages is so important to educate and preserve the next generation." He added, "Being exposed to positive content is what changed my life. I believe there is a market in our community for a new diverse network that provides a new brand of superior programming that caters to all aspects of television from reality to original programming. In addition, I'm excited to be able to expose the urban community to a vast array of jobs in the entertainment community that they might not otherwise be privy to. I have a great relationship with BET and MTV, and my son and I will continue to do work with them and support their networks. Posts: 9 08/17/08 11:42:21	...in stark contrast in Jay-Z, Russell Simmons, (and to a lesser extent, David Banner), etc. who through their particular brand of "don't knock the hustle" materialism, largely contributed in the mid to late 90s to the musical and cultural stagnation of hip-hop, and now claim to have "found religion", as to the error of their ways, while still lining their pockets on "pseudo-conscious" record labels and product, I continue be impressed with the journey Master P has taken in becoming a better artist, father, and person. I pray that his latest enterprise can effectively project hip-hop culture as the real positive force that the record companies have so far effectively muzzled. peace

I can respect him as a sponsor or supporter of the campaign for better media for black folks.. but as the actual chairman Im not convinced that hes doing this for any reason besides a chance to cake up a lil more. P made MILLIONS off of vulgar music and movies and took advantage of the talent that outshined him on his label to build an empire. People do change but does this mean that 10 years from now we'll place R Kelly as the president of an urban child abuse program? P and Russel are closer in character than you think jkplete. Russel is doin his good deeds w/ his credit card hustle and HSAN network... so P flipped his into BBTV. Lets just hope reality kicks in for these cats and somewhere along the way they realize the damage theyve done and see our communities as more than a paycheck to cash in on

But my point was that unlike Jay and Russell, P has apologized for the role that his music has done in poisoning our people and culture, not only publicly, but also to Congress. He had made efforts to make family friendly rap albums, and had some TV exposure with his son. He also stepped out of his comfort zone too. I know I voted for him several times on Dancing with the Stars, horrible as he was :D Given that foundation, I am more willing to give him the benefit of the doubt to try and fail (or succeed) with this new network than I am Jay's "wine merchant", fashion, and clubbing enterprises, or Russell, with his "gettting black folks in more consumer debt" credit card and his wack "vote or die" network. Not to mention his "yoga-and tofu love and peace" schtick while cursing everyong left and right, and acting a fool with Farai Chideya when called on his "rap is the crying out of gangsta thugs" defense. peace

Posts: 8 08/21/08 18:14:51	aight cosmonaut...ask yourself THIS question. how many other nonprofit tasks could p miller be involved in that would do just as much ..if not more for his hometown/ the mississippi valley/ american ghettos/ the underprivileged villages of africa? you cant really think he just decided out of the kindness of his heart he wanted to start up a network. P is a businessman first and foremost..he saw a need and jumped on it like any good investor would. BOTTOM LINE. can some good come of it? YES. im probably more skeptical than most but i would like to see this be better than BET. im just not naive enough to believe he doesnt stand to double his account balance. everyone knows BET isnt for black folks any more. if BBTV is semi-legit they can charge what they want for ad time and thats how you'll be able to tell how responsible they are. Posts: 1 08/28/08 04:18:01	I don't think that we should be worried about the money that P is making, more as we should be worried about the content that he will be bring to our community. He never said he wasn't getting paid. It takes a lot of money to start a network. I do not expect him not to get paid. What I expect is with the socially responsible board members that he has, he is trying to create a change in the mentality of our people. Change the mind of some of the kids that think picking up a gun and slangin dope is the answer. Bring a sense of family, responsibility, and community to out people. You're right, there is a lot of non profit things P could be doing with his money, and I'm sure he does those things too. But those things do not give families something other than buffoonery and ass shakin to watch on TV. And just because something is nonprofit doesn't mean money's not flowing. Rainbow PUSH is non profit, and Jesse Jackson is rich. At least he's trying to inject the antidote into the community that he used to poison. Whether he gets paid, is irrelevant, when it comes to positivity. He could doing a lot worse to the community.
