Posts: 735 07/15/08 10:34:43	Tags : None I hope no one is offended, but this is a 'satirical cover' which is meant to bring attention to the rise of anti-semetic/white supremacist groups here in the United States. Anyone with half a brain knows that I would never support such a vile concept. And as was pointed out by David Remnick editor of the New Yorker Magazine which is being parodied here, most of us are smart enough to read between the lines. Or at least I hope so... I believe well known columnist and blogger Andrew Sullivan said this just the other day on CNN as he dismissively told people to get over it. Like I said, as we all know in recent months there has been a rise in Ku Klux Klan and Nazi activities especially along the South West borders of this great and tolerant nation. Posts: 6 10/07/08 06:44:12	With all due respect, Critical Eye, that's a cop-out. Regardless of a word's origins, we know what it means today. There was a time when if you called a man "gay" it would be taken as a compliment, because it just meant happy. But calling someone that today, has a whole different effect. "Bastard" is technically just a word to describe a child who was born out of wedlock, but it's currently used purely as a pejorative that can be applied to anyone. And so on. If it's wrong to call someone a derogatory name based on their race, then it needs to apply to EVERYONE. It has nothing to do with "systematically depriving a whole group of people's humanity," it about simply treating individuals with respect, and not falling back on cheap excuses to justify double-standards. I won't. Why? Because hell would have to freeze over first, and we know that ain't gonna happen. Since when was UNDERSTANDING the origin of a word qualifying as a cop-out? Regardless of how a word is used today, it still has an origin, and irregardless of how it may change and mutate over time, that still does not change from whence it came or how it came to be. I stand firm by what I said. By the way, "gay" is used to denote a SEXUAL PREFERENCE, not a race. Don't get it twisted.

If someone wants respect from me, then they'd better give me respect. Equal Rights means just that: we should all be treated equally. I was simply using it as an example of your claim about how the origins of the word are more important than their current meaning. The origin of the word "gay" had NOTHING to do with sexual preference, but rather with an emotion: being HAPPY.

The Obama cover could be taken in any direction though I DO understand where the uproar can come from. From my viewpoint, it looked kinda cool, but don't take me as a "turrist lovin' 'murican"...LOL!!! Not to jump into the fray of the previous posts, but if one can produce positives for so-called deragotory terms regarding race,ethnicity, etc. then you can not discount the other side of the coin. There are even theories on the origins of the so-called "n-word" that can take you back to pre-colonial days. Any one group's power over "words" will most likely be finite, meaning there is a limit.
