I gotta
admit I was disappointed when I first heard my homie Ice T tell Soulja Boy to go eat a dick. It was bad look and made him
sound like he was either bitter or jealous. Regardless of how you feel about Soulja Boy's music, when you are an icon of Ice T's status you have to
carry yourself differently. Ice at this stage of his career needs to be an elder statesman who is available to help guide those who are coming up behind him.
He shouldn't be involved in a war of words with a 17 year old who never dissed him. It looks even more suspect when you are actually releasing an album,
which is what Ice T is doing. Him attacking Soulja Boy comes across as a cheap gimmick. One would expect more from Ice T.
Now Ice has clarified his position and says this is really a situation about good Hip Hop vs wack Hip Hop. There's nothing wrong with that, but how about handling it differently? Lemme give you an example.
Last year Scaraface was asked what he thought about Soulja Boy. Scarface said that his kids enjoy dude's music and that he was thinking about reaching out to him so he can get Soulja Boy to help him. Scarface's point was that he knows his music doesn't resonate with those who are in his kid's generation. He was savvy enough to realize that a smart course of action would be to engage the people that are. Perhaps an elder like Scarface being in the studio with a young Soulja Boy could achieve the goals that Ice T says he wants for Hip Hop. By working directly with someone he could help people to step their game up.
In any case this situation can go one of several ways. Folks like Ice T can own up to his genuine desires to see Hip Hop improve and demonstrate leadership by leading this discussion and deading any potential conflict.
It'll be up to people like him to make sure that outside forces including journalist looking for the next sensational story about Hip Hop to exploit don't start tagging this war of words via You Tube 'old vs young'.
That would be some Willie Lynch shit come true.
Already we have artists like Kanye West and Spyder Loc of G-Unit weighing in, putting out blogs and videos coming out against Ice T. Once others start getting in the mix, then this situation will take on a life of its own with unintended consequences due to the fact that others may have their own agendas to push.
We even have Soulja Boy responding with a cartoon You Tube video which clearly shows that he's 17. Hopefully someone will let him know that his initial response to Ice T was sufficient that his solid points will evaporate if he continues to engage this situation publicly.
So if this is about good Hip Hop vs wack Hip Hop then lets not be wack by keeping this war of words going. I say do like Soulja Boy suggested, lets find ways to make this music and culture better.

ICE-T VS. SOULJA BOY:
Hip hop O.G. explains YouTube beef with teenage rapper.
(June 24, 2008)

And so it has
come to this. The latest hip hop beef to hit the Internet - played out in back-and-forth clips on YouTube - is between O.G.
rapper Ice T, age 50; and 17-year-old rap sensation Soulja Boy.
It all started last week when Ice T appeared on a mixtape intro that blamed Soulja Boy for "single-handedly killing hip hop" with his single "Crank That (Soulja Boy)" and suggesting that the youngster "eat a d**k.

Soulja Boy retaliated with his own YouTube clip in which he made fun of Ice T's age, his real name (Tracy Lauren Morrow), his role as a cop on "Law & Order: SVU" and the fact that he reps the West Coast but was born in New Jersey.

Ice T came back again with an explanation of how his original Soulja Boy dis came about, saying he "went on one" when producers of the mixtape asked him to comment on the current state of hip hop. Ice T apologized for telling Soulja Boy to "eat a d**k," but maintained his position that the teen's music is a disaster.
"A brother of my caliber shouldn't be talking down on a youngster of your age," said Ice. "But as far as your music goes, it's garbage. And I'm saying that for all of hip hop, homie.

Allhiphop. com got an exclusive with Ice T to get to the bottom of the beef.
"I'd like to clarify how all this s**t jumped off," Ice-T explained. "I was in the recording booth doing a mixtape, and the cats in there doing the promotion were f*cking with me. They were saying things about 'Soulja Boy this, Soulja Boy that' and basically I went on one. It wasn't meant to be evil, it was basically that Hip-Hop 'n*gga f**k that' stance.
"
"I didn't expect them to use that clip to promote their mixtape," Ice-T reasoned. "So I'm in the crib and n*ggas is calling me talking about Soulja Boy is replying to you on the Internet. And I'm like 'replying to what?' So I see it and I'm like 'man here we go.' It was a statement made behind closed doors, not meant to be an attack on this n***a.
"I didn't even know dude was 17 years-old," Ice continues. "I felt bad. I know I came hard at the n***a, but at the end of the day that's just an old school, passionate Hip-Hopper trying to keep this thing 100. I'm not trying to disrespect Collipark or even lil homie [Soulja Boy]. Of course I overreacted…it's not meant to be harmful. Bottom line is I would like to see rappers of today step their game up.
