Mos Def
Does Comedy-Set to Partake in the Ultimate Emcee Battle
By Davey D
Mos Def
has been making big moves as of late and with each day is establishing himself as a Paul Robensonisque type figure. He's doing movies, making Hip Hop
albums, singing, selling out shows even after they been announced with little or no notice and of course he speaks out on political and social causes.
In a couple of weeks Mos Def will make history by performing at New York's famed Carnegie Hall and have a full symphony accompanying him.
Last night (Tuesday June 17th) here at San Fracisco's famed Cobb's Comedy Theater, Mos added to his resume, by showing up as a
surprised guest in the middle of a sold Dave Chapelle comedy show.
He then took the stage to thunderous applause started doing comedy routines with Chapelle. He was actually pretty funny, especially when him and Chapelle
started doing improvisational skits. Mos Def is enormously talented.
When I left the Chapelle show it was 2am in the morning. The show started at 8:30 pm. Mos and Chapelle had been on the stage for over 4 hours bantering back
and forth and leaving the crowd in stitches.
So while Mos was funny, what really caught my attention was an announcement he made in response to a question Chapelle had asked him about battling. Mos noted
that there were much more important things to deal with then to simply battle, but he understands the hunger that Hip Hop audiences have for it.
Hence he has been quietly working behind the scenes to give Hip Hop and the city of New Orleans its ultimate battle.
The commemorate the 3rd anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, Mos announced that he and a number of other artists will be forming battle teams and
will go head to head with each other in the Superdome where they hope to compete for 10 million dollars which will go to organizations helping displaced people
who still have not been able to return to New Orleans.
Mos took some time from his comedic routine to talk about the Hurricane Katrina Relief Found and Common Ground and the
importance of rebuilding and returning people back to the devastated 9th Ward
Mos announced his battle team which thus far consists of him, Black Thought and MF Doom.
He noted that others like Kanye West, Jay-Z and hopefully Nas will be heading up their own teams. Mos said
the competition will allow each team to bring forth their own ringers and that people will be battling not just in rap, but there will be a battle of the
bands, battle of the beats, drill team battles and of course the team battles for rap.
be on the look out as Mos will soon lace us up with more info on this historic battle in new Orleans. Like he said if rappers are gonna battle, then lets do so
for a good cause, and getting people back home to New Orleans is the order of the day.
