This year will go down as the one when the mainstream media worked over time to sabotage the Democratic primary. For months, Senator Barack Obama has been the undisputed frontrunner. Even before this week's decisive primary races in Guam, North Carolina and Indiana, he was ahead in the delegates count (1748 as compared to Clinton's 1609, according to realclearpolitics.com). He's been ahead by a comfortable margin in the popular vote. He's raised more money than anyone, with no sign of letting up. And as if that weren't enough, he's ignited record youth voter turnouts in one state after another all year. By now, in any other election, the Democratic Party would have strongly encouraged the losing candidate to concede. The only logical reason why they haven't-especially since Hillary Clinton doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell of winning-is because Party leaders don't want to accept Obama as their candidate. The party's failure to accept the front-runner has created an opening for the media to take him down. Because of decisions made in elite newsrooms, for six weeks the nation's attention has been focused on the pastor of the frontrunner. The magnitude of coverage for someone on the periphery of a major election, such as Wright, is unprecedented. Let's be clear: the media gave Jeremiah Wright national coverage for a speech at the NAACP convention the day after a heavily publicized PBS appearance. In recent history, I don't ever recall the media giving 'breaking news' live coverage to any Black Civil Rights organization. Even President Bill Clinton's 1992 chastisement of Sista Souljah at the Rainbow Coalition gathering was witnessed via played back sound bites. The next day, plenty of stories warranted national coverage: record gas prices, the acquittal of New York police officers who fired 50 shots at an unarmed man, and American casualties in Iraq. Instead, you guessed it, the retired pastor's press event topped headlines. Those who accept as benign our media's highly irregular focus on Reverend Wright, will say that he is news and that his being Obama's minister, past or present, makes his center stage coverage par for the course. But I don't see the media giving any associate of any other candidate one iota of such treatment. What makes Obama, who less than two months ago was labeled a "free pass toting media darling," so special? A week after Obama denounced Wright, the Reverend's name is still synonymous with Obama. As a result Obama was transformed before our eyes from a candidate of hope to the angry, elite, unelectable Black man. Or so it seems the mainstream media hoped. Pay close attention as the pendulum slowly swings away from silhouettes of the angry Black man to the kinder, gentler, smiling face of Senator Clinton, praise songs focused on her experience, high fives to her toughness, and one story after another (from CNN to Fox) that unashamedly adopted Hillary Clinton's campaign strategy as their news angle of the day. As late as Monday, major news outlets were still at their sensational best, reporting on the latest polls that suggested Senator Clinton now has a better chance than Barack of beating McCain in the general election. The coverage suggested that the polls, not Obama's comfortable lead, should determine whether or not Clinton remained a serious contender. The final decision, according to the media-even after Obama again confirmed his position yesterday in North Carolina and Indiana-should come from superdelegates. This again, out of Clinton campaign strategy playbook. Meanwhile those of us at home are seduced into a collective wait, hope, pray even, that Wright's demonization or some other unforeseen glitch will finally pummel Obama into submission. And at last the speculative focus on what could happen in this primary race, became a substitute for reporting what is happening. Even if Obama wins, as some mainstream media outlets are now reluctantly conceding, the one-sided manipulative coverage we've collectively stomached is an international embarrassment, a huge disservice to the citizens of this country, and an enormous blow to the democratic process. I have become increasingly sickened by the amount of corruptibility in the media, how the major corporations have become increasingly manipulatable, how channels such as Fox News and CNN are so obviously and sickeningly biased, however i wonder how much influence they actually have, i wonder the difference they will make in the popular polls, surely the super-delegates cannot override the popular vote, surely the legal infrastructure of this nation is not so fickle, so easily manipulated, so strongly controlled that certain high powered officials, who want a certain outcome, can change the winner of the democratic election... is the fear of the black, african-american nation so great that corrupt politics would take precedence over popular demand? if so, then i give up on this nation, if Obama has the win stolen from him i fear i may simply give up, how fucking heartless and senseless has this political machine become, how much longer must oppression stand? this nation is being lead by people who are living in the past and i feel that the time is nigh for the youth to make its voice heard, but the problem, it seems to me, is that the youth isn't strong, it does not have a voice yet, we are told what to like and what to think and we are content with absorbing it all with no sense of question, I'm 19 and have gone through a year of college at Boston University, i studied acting on a scholarship. I'm taking a year off and i dont intend to return. I beleive the education system is a relic of the past and teaches only certain ideals, safe ideals, ideals that do not allow for interjection, for opposing opinion, the youth is undereducated and overfed on nonsense and useless jargon. WE NEED TO FIND A COMMON MOVEMENT, A BANNER UNDER WHICH TO UNITE. otherwise we will become lost inside the belly of this horrible machine...

Posts: 1 05/19/08 23:12:37	To Theox2789: Much Props You couldn't have said it better. Very intelligently put, I feel the same exact way, almost as if you took the words out of my mouth. The time is now for the youth to have our voices heard and make a difference, WE NEED A COMMON MOVEMENT! That common movement should be to be equally and fairly of informed of the Truth and not bias bullshit. I do not want to preech or get into what should be gettin done as that could go on for pages. I am going to make changes and our voices will be heard, you can bet anything on that. I am writing this becuase this was another good article posted by DaveyD.. and your response MOVED me. If you see this I would love to exchange e-mail's with you or some form of contact as I am starting my own website to promote unbias and knowledgable information that EVERYBODY (regardless of race, gender, religion, ethnicity, background, social status, etc) should know. I feel you mirror that image. I know you dont know me from a hole a in the wall, and I understand if you are reluctant to respond, but I feel an interview or maybe even a blog on the website from a person such as yourself is something that should be getting exposure.

I'm a Black male and I've lived a little longer than you and It's not often that I've heard White males speak honestly about this country! I find your honesty to be very refreshing! However, I don't think dropping out of college is the answer! As a matter of fact this country needs more progressive young minds such as yourself! You need to work within the system to bring about the kind of change you desire to see! In terms of the mainstream media, it always has and probably always will be biased against Black people! Until and unless we as Black people control our own images, we will continue to be portrayed in a negative light by those who control the camera lens and the radio airwaves. The mainstream media has pretty much already stolen the election from Obama by focusing on comments that Obama's pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright made! Conversely you haven't seen or heard anything about Hillary's pastor who was recently sentenced to several years in prison for touching a child inappropriately or McCain's spiritual advisor Pastor Hagee who made disparaging remarks about the Catholic church! Clearly there's a double standard at play here! Hillary with an assist from the media has sullied up Obama's name so much that by the time he get's to the general election against McCain, most conservative Whites and other non-Black's will vote for McCain! I hope that I'm wrong but from the way it looks right now, that's what's going to happen! Peace
