Its been a long week with a whole of things being thrown at us for us to think about.
From the troubled economy to racial attacks directed to President Obama to new schemes designed to lock up Brown folks accused of being 'undocumented'. We wanted this weeks 25 Joints to be reminder about the struggles we have. We also wanted folks to come away inspired by both the boldness in which folks attack these problems as well as just the pure dopeness of Hip Hop.
We also remind folks that commercial radio is lost in space.. which is ok because outlets like Breakdown FM are always grounded and ready to bring the beat.
Pittsburgh spoken word artist Vanessa German kicks off this weeks 25 Joints with an inspiring piece called 'One Wing'. Ripped over a True and Living Beat by Zion I.. She sets the tone about the seriousness of this week's music.
We follow that up with my favorite song off the brand new incredible Zion I Take Over album. The cut is called Caged Bird and it features the one and only Brother Ali
Other standout songs include Paris who hits us upside the dome as he addresses issues like police brutality with 'True'. The brother still brings heat-be sure to check out his album 'Acid Reflex'.
Staten Island based NY Oil comes hard also with a song that addresses police brutality called 'Nightstick'. Here Oil deals with all the shootings that have gone down this year including Oscar Grant, Annette Garcia and Andre Grimes. The song is incredible.
Sunspot Jonz of the Living Legends crew steps to the plate with a dope song called 'Dip Down'. He seems to be having fun spitting rhymes over a sinister beat. The video is getting play on MTV of all places.
Azeem also comes with heat with his new song 'Going Dumb vs Going to Brazil'. This is where the hyphy movement was at before it was killed by local commercial radio.
We went digging in the crates and pulled out a couple of gems including Queen Latifah and Daddy O's classic 'The Pros'. We drop an underground joint straight outta B-More (Baltimore) from Omar Akbar aka Labtekwan called 'Hard to 2 the Core'
