What Was so Big about Biggie Smalls?

by Minister Paul Scott

There's a new movie coming out, next month, called "Notorious.

" It's the story of a black kid who grew up on the mean city streets, became a Black Panther and dedicated his life
to stopping police brutality and trying to organize street gangs into a revolutionary political
movement. The story ends with him being murdered in his bed by the police as he slept next to his pregnant...

its not often what you say, but how you say it. biggie said it so well! one of the best storytellers to ever grace the mic. and yeah, its all relative, but
when I close my eyes and listen to big and I'm there on the block, in bed-stuy NY. biggie was so visual. biggie was street CNN! for me the best, most
classic, most funky and still fresh FLOW ever. never heard him flow wack, not once(post life after doesn't count cause those were piecemeal productions).
the most distinctive, coolest...

Big's fame is due to his ability to describe the low life of drugs, sex, and murder with the use of brilliant and creative metaphors: 'Now the girls
peepee when they see me/Navaho's creep me in they teepee."

His style at once forces the hearer into a contradiction: One must recognize his lyrical prowess while simultaneously detesting his deviant morality.
Compared to Biggie, other gangsta rappers are merely vulgar. Most of the others are either imitators...

Hmm, i'll agree with some of it but not all. If your definition of classic hip-hop is transcendent albums which push in progressive directions while
updating what's come before, then, sure, Nation of Millions and the Score would make most Top Ten albums list. If your definition of classic hip-hop is
something which, years later, can be seen as a social, cultural and musical documentation of what was going on at a certain place and time, Ready to Die makes
the list, as would, say,...

I said the same thing. My question is, if Biggie was still alive would he still be with Sean Combs? Would he still be making hits? I blame Puff for the
excitement of Biggie.

To tell you the truth I was never a big fan of Biggie; I liked a couple of songs but overall, he's no different form Cam, Dipset and other rappers who talk
about crack, sex, murdering your own people, to scared to approach white people but so quit to kill your own, and...basically what I am trying to say...

I will say that I am a fan of Big's but I am real when I comes to music no matter how much I like an artist. I mean I feel that KRS is the best to ever do
it....but I am real enough to say that he has made some lack luster music before. I think that this is what hurts Hip Hop.

Big was a monster on the mic but you have to be real and say that although READY TO DIE was a classic album....LIFE AFTER DEATH was not. Maybe one CD of good
music. There was no reason to turn this into a...
